Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin represents a single medical faculty, which serves both Humboldt Universtität zu Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin. Charité extends over four campuses, and has close to 100 different Departments and Institutes, which make up a total of 17 different Charité Centers.
For more than 125 years, the Protestant church community of Wattenscheid has run the Martin Luther Hospital. Since 1996, the Martin Luther Hospital has become the only hospital in Wattenscheid that offers basic hospital care in for a population of approximately 80,000 inhabitants in the area, since the neighboring St. Marien Hospital has been transformed into a geriatric rehabilitation clinic. Since January 2016, the Martin-Luther-Krankenhaus gGmbH has been on the side of the Evangelische Kliniken Gelsenkirchen GmbH under the joint sponsorship of the Diakoniewerk Gelsenkirchen and Wattenscheid e. V.
The house has around 298 beds. It has the departments anesthesia / intensive care medicine , ophthalmology (document division) with 4 beds, accident, general and visceral surgery with 77 beds, Internal Medicine with 91 beds (incl. Gastroenterology and cardiology) and Psychiatry incl. A psychiatric outpatient clinic.
The clinic provides about 8000 patients on an outpatient basis every year and about 13,000 patients on an outpatient basis and employs around 500 people, of whom more than 200 are employed in the care sector .
